19-year-old Liane lives with her mother and sister in Fréjus, in the south of France. Obsessed with beauty and ambitions to become a star, she takes part in the reality show “Isle of Wonders”. Agathe Riedinger’s film does not reproduce romantic clichés. It is wonderfully authentic and, like life, unadorned. Impeccable acting and character development that is difficult to shake off. A great script that deliberately – with a maturity rarely seen in debuts – avoids the path of drama. The director hints at this and then consistently leads us down another path. The reality of this film is far from the black and white simplifications to which decades of patriarchal storytelling have accustomed us. Here, the woman is the subject. Beautiful cinema, an incredible debut. 10/10.
