Lupita Nyong’o joins writer-director Chris Sanders to discuss notable credits and their time together making The Wild Robot
Line of Events
After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot named Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the animals on the island and cares for an orphaned baby goose. According to author Peter Brown, the inspiration for “The Wild Robot” came from a sketch he made of a robot in a tree. He then asked the question, “What would an intelligent robot do in the wild?” When the fox enters the cabin, a moose near the door grunts, but the sound effect used is a recording of a bear.

After directing an adaptation of Jack London’s classic The Call of the Wild, Sanders adapted a best-selling novel by Peter Brown called The Wild Robot, a thrilling and heartwarming sci-fi drama about a robot named Roz who is stranded on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to her surroundings and take on the responsibility of adopting a young orphaned goose named Brightbill. Sanders, who wrote and directed the film, made it a masterpiece, and with his longtime collaborator and executive producer Dean DeBois and producer Jeff Hermann, Sanders joined forces with Dreamworks Animation, the studio behind Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, to create this groundbreaking animated masterpiece. Featuring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyongo in the lead role as Roz, along with an all-star voice cast, groundbreaking animation and a moving story that brings the literary phenomenon to life.

The visual storytelling was influenced by films such as James Cameron’s Avatar, Brad Bird’s Iron Giant, Zemieck’s Cast Away and Kirk DeMicco & Faryn Pearl’s Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken, while the emotionally driven character performances were also influenced by films such as Nick Cassavetes’ My Sister’s Keeper, Tony Goldwyn’s The Last Kiss, Nigel Cole’s A Lot Like Love and R. J. Sanders and the film’s head of story, Heidi Jo Gilbert, created a beautiful and moving script and story that developed the emotional relationship between Roz & Brightbill, and set a more serious tone than any animated film had done before. The voice cast was incredibly well-cast, with Lupita as Roz, along with newcomer and British sensation Kit Connor as Brightbill, Pedro Pascal as Flick, voice acting legend Mark Hamill as Thorn the bear, Catherine O’Hara as Pinktail, British sensation Matt Berry as Paddler, Bill Nighy as Longneck, Stephanie Hsu as Vontra, and Ving Rhames as Thunderbird The Falcon (a new character created for the film), giving their best performances that could make this film a potential Oscar frontrunner for Best Animated Feature.
